AnandBhushan, FashionDesigner

My video chat with  Anand Bhushan, Delhi based designer who i caught up with at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week in Delhi.  Says Anand-" I do statement pieces with a  modern, edgy take to them"

Anand is an award winning post graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and a graduate from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, but his training and experience as a designer informs about him more than his formal education.

An understanding of where fashion and textile has been and where it may be going is vital to Anand's technique and to his creative process. The label 'Anand Bhushan' makes fashion creative but also continues to cultivate the modern, edgy take on upscale dressing which the designer has become known for.

Christian-Yoose- The Hyper-Local Mobile Ad Network

I talk to Christian about Yoose- the Hyper-Local Mobile Ad Network - something that looks like Geo-fencing but is independent of the mobile operator. So if you are in a mall in a city, you get banner ads that say "XYZ special in this store, about 10 meters ahead" which you could do with specific operators but now can do across using Yoose. The outcome is that click rates are 2-3X better than banner advertising. he talks about the technology, usecases and the benefits.

YOOSE was founded in 2009 by CEO, Christian Geissendoerfer. YOOSE has since successfully launched location-based mobile ad campaigns for brands in Germany, Singapore, India, Russia, UK and Australia. YOOSE is recognised throughout the industry for its consumer engagement innovation and location targeting expertise.

Christian’s career began in the IT and software industry where he held a variety of sales and marketing positions for leading companies such as Lotus Development Corporation, Deutsche Bank and IBM. As Marketing Manager for IBM, Christian successfully developed new ‘routes to market’ strategies and managed brands and customer sets across the EMEA region. In 2008 Christian became founder and CEO of his own venture, YOOSE: the hyper-local mobile ad network. YOOSE has since launched its services in Germany, Singapore and India and is gaining industry-wide recognition for innovation and expertise in consumer engagement through mobile location targeting and couponing.

Vishnu, as he is introduced on the Havas Website : In an earlier incarnation as an offshore oil engineer, Vishnu had developed the ability to get to the core of a problem. In his post-MBA career of advertising, he has honed it to perfection.

This bright young alumnus of Asia's number one management institute, Indian Institute of Management -, started out at DY&R in Bombay principally looking after the Colgate Palmolive account. Vishnu continued this dual tradition in his next job at Saatchi & Saatchi India. Where he took on a New Business role alongside his position as Director, Strategic Planning on P&G.

Moving to Singapore in 1995 to work with Euro RSCG Partnership, Vishnu helped raise the media department to a new level of pro-active functioning. His second job was devising strategic plans for many key clients. Vishnu was back with account servicing in mid 1998 starting with regional brand custodianship of the network's largest brands viz. Philips and Dell. He continued to do so wearing a dual hat of management stepping into the shoes of Managing Director of the agency in 2001.

The love for media saw Vishnu back in action with a media hat this time with MPG, the media arm of Havas in mid 2004. While consolidating existing business, Vishnu helped put many more countries on the MPG network map. By the start of 2007, he had set up a network of 26 operations across 18 cities in Asia Pacific covering the disciplines of traditional, digital and sports marketing all of which report into him in his role as the CEO for Havas Media in Asia Pacific as well as Havas Digital Regional Manager in APAC.

You know what Mobile Short codes are, right? Well, TMS has created a platform for the internet in the post PC world, and it centers around TMS Shortcodes, which are SMS and Operator Independent. Their evangelical cry is " Please Do Not Develop A Mobile Strategy, Put Mobile At The Heart Of Your Media Strategy"..

In this video with Jonathan Ellis, the CEO of TMSway, a Media Guru with significant stints in Virgin Media, Eurosport and Star/Sky, Jonathan talks about their new platform which is mobile based as an integrator/ bridge between various media channels such as TV, Radio and Press...and in the process, collect great data. He talks about how they learnt from the #1 standard on the planet- the SMS, with 4 billion users. So they took the shortcode and created a Telco independent variant of this, to deliver personal optimised content to consumers. He talks about how they used this platform with an FMCG brand in Indonesia. The idea is to create a platform that works across all kinds of phones, including lower performance ones, which will be about getting to as many of the 4 Billion as possible...

He also talks about the importance of realtime analytics- and how thats the best way to convert interest into action- about how the same shortcode can offer different offers to different consumers at different times...

Gustav-Praekelt-Entrepreneur-Computational Social Science

My very interesting chat with Gustav- founder Entrepreneur of Praekelt  who focuses on creating behaviour change in people using mobile technology. He has both for-profit and not-for profit activities which intertwine. A great story and an interesting idea that has the hallmarks of a good business. here he explains the notion of Computational Social Science and things like Influence and Susceptibility of an individual in a network- he is building on the work of  behavioral scientist Sinan Aral @ NYU- he also talks about the social community they built called YoungAfricaLive

Gustav Praekelt's  Praekelt Consulting enables clients to distribute content to mobile users, leveraging the fast growing penetration of mobile phones mainly in Africa. Gustav was inspired to start Praekelt after a visit to Tanzania where he noticed that everyone -- from the nurses, cleaners and the bank clerks — owned a mobile phone.

Gustav is passionate about using mobile technology to develop social solutions that improve the health and well-being of people living in poverty. Gustav started the Praekelt Foundation, an incubator that has produced products such as TxtAlert, an award-winning messaging platform that was used to increase clinic attendance rates among HIV patients. Already receiving global recognition for its work, the Praekelt Foundation received an 825,000USD grant from Omidyar Network. In 2011, the Praekelt Foundation launched a mobile community called YoungAfricaLive (YAL), a project dedicated to providing education and stimulating dialogue about the concerns of teens and young adults such as love and sexual health, which won the Global Gold Social Impact Award at the 7th Annual Global Mobile Marketing Awards.

If there is one industry that has been impacted by the information/social media/ engagement trends, its Market Research- and talking to Piyush Mathur the bluechip folks in MR- Nielsen- makes for a great conversation.

He talks about how Market Research's business model has evolved over time. how things like realtime data and access to customers are changing  the value proposition- as an example, he mention's Nielsen's Scantrack for retail markets where weekend sales are reflected in reports 3 days later... he also mentions social media insights tieup with Nielsen has with McKinsey- and how that resulted in interesting cocreation examples in the cereal category. some great insights from an articulate guru in this field.

I had a glitch in my video so had to insert some visuals in the last few seconds -after 8:24- the audio is fine though...

RobMarston-ZeusUnwired-Mobile Evangelist & Entrepreneur

My video chat with Media/ Publisher and Ad Guru, Rob Marston, CEO/Entrepreneur of  Zeus Unwired, a passionate mobile advertising evangelist who espouses his cause in Sydney, Australia but is from Newcastle (UK).

Says Rob - “You miss the integration benefits of all the channels with the mobile platform when you look at mobile as a separate channel and a strategy,” - of an organisation's efforts to focus on the mobile platform to reach its customers- he advocates Integration as the key.

Says he on the nascent mobile ad spending : "Even in an advanced market like Australia, with 60% smartphone/40% tablet ownership, the mobile ad spend is only $40B of the total online digital spend of $3B- ~1% - i want a slice of the big pie which is in mainstream , rather than looking for the scraps on the floor left after"...

On the future , he is very bullish about tablets - and hisSnap, Dine and Cook analogy is an excellent way for us to think about how consumers use different devides and how we should plan for them....
Snap -is how we use Mobile Devices-  we look for quick information- instantaneous -ex movie times, quizzes
Dine - is about Tablets -a relaxed experience, immersive, engaged in longer form content, games, strategic rather than dipin dip out
and Cook is how we use the Laptop/desktop - used to do heavy lifting, document processing, music editing etc

A content packed interesting set of insights from Rob

My video with Jonathan Bill, head of Innovation & Biz Development @ Vodafone India- a Londoner based in Mumbai..

Vodafone India is looking to data to take it to the next level in the Indian market. With 35 million internet users Voda has taken the first step to stir up the ecosystem in the indian telecom market by changing the  revenue-share percentage between developers and telcos- going forward, developers will keep 70% of the revenue, as compared to the currently prevalent 25-30%-more on this topic specifically in this insightful blog post by Dev Khare ,another of my illustrious interviewees... Jonathan used to be in Egypt before this and has seen the Arab spring unfurl....

Some of Jonathan's Insights :
"We are the #3 internet ecosystem in the planet today"
"There are two things different about the indian ecosystem- the business ethos is unique- and we are leapfrogging the fixed line internet and shifting straight to mobile- the transactional business model is a reality as compared to other markets- you only need 1-2 rupees from a large number of people to make a good business."
"The good times have started for 3G about 3 months ago"
"Mobile telephony and Internet have a significant effect on GDP growth"
"We are now in a simultaneous global position- we are not needing to wait for global innovation to reach India 6 months later anymore"
"Without question, Video is huge"

Ashutosh Srivastava- Emerging Markets CEO- Mindshare

My video chat with Ashutosh Srivastava, Chairman/CEO of APAC and Russia for Mindshare, a true doyen and a leader in the advertising world- great insights.

Some insights:
"People are doing multiple things at the same time- like playing with their mobiles whilst watching TV- challenge is for us and marketers who want to engage and sell to these people- for instance,do they pay attention to the ads that cost Millions of $ ?"

"Consumers access information wherever they go- so not just the shop, but wherever u go- this has made life difficult for marketers who have to track them wherever they go rather than being in front of them at 9 at their home when they watch tv"

"Adoption of mobile devices is changing the lives of consumers and their behaviour- wake up to mobiles, social netowrk, email, and this continues right thro the day"

"The complexity of connecting a brand with the consumer has increased"

"The opportunity lies in it being such a personal device- its far easier to connect  with the consumer, but only if you provide value- information, entertainment etc..."

On Accountability- "Traditional media campaigns on TV and newspapers- there are ways to measure exposure to consumer- once a month or in TVs case, weekly or daily basis, had an estimate of people being exposed to the brand- while you couldnt correlate that to results- like buy/recommend, norms evolved over time specially in FMCG- now, thats changed- because of infusion of tech into media- all devices are connected back to net and its possible to observe behaviour- second by second, minute by minute- all in Real time, so the ability to measure Return on money invested has significantly improved"

"The lines are blurring between the world of Branding  and the World of Direct marketing owing to the ability to pickup and collect data in realtime"

About Ashutosh- Ashutosh relocated to Singapore in August 2006 as CEO of MindShare Asia Pacific. He was previously CEO of GroupM South Asia and a board director since October 2004. Ashutosh helped set up MindShare India in 2001 and was its Managing Director until September 2004.

He led MindShare to a real position of strength in its first three years, helping win a host of new clients and making it a true ‘house of media' for its clients. Ashutosh has been in the communications business since he did his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, Asia's leading business school.

Before long, he hopes to see media undergo a real shift to engaging with consumers rather than annoying them with interruptions all the time.

Sorry, a bit noisy, the environment- apologies!

Some insights :
"holistic design is key- the balance between hardware, industrial design, mechanical, software, apps and services, and the brand- all need to be packaged"
"there are 2 worlds- the first is the smartfone becomes lower priced, and the second is those that cannot use mobile phones today -284 million of them"

Apologies- a bit noisy- however audible, i think - sorry about that!

Some of his insights:
-"our vision is to provide empowerment to people"
-"we invested on R&D and design side of the business and have +150 people in R&D"
-"we were able to fulfil local requirements such as Dual-Sim and Very High Battery- where most of the multinationals failed"
-"real action is in the bottom of the pyramid and should fit deep in corporate strategy"
-"82% of our components is sourced outside of India- only 18% is Indian- it has a high impact because assembly is a very small part of valuation- i cannot recover value only by this"
"Hardware based differentiation is going to be limited- cannot differentiate too much on things like touch, formfactor etc - and software is where the differentiation is- and thats where we have an edge over China"

BinayTiwari VServ MobileEcosystem

The 7th Mass Media Channel, is how Tomi Ahonen describes the mobile phone-  -and Binay is a believer- here he talks passionately about why he is so evangelical about the mobile ecosystem. Some of his insights:

"I love the mobile world - consider Venkat, an app developer, who started to make 15X the salary he was offered by one of the leading IT companies that he did not take - and this was 3 months after he released his app"

"There are reasons why mobile markets are different between first world and emerging world- for instance, they are prepaid markets- hence devices are lower priced (though a feature phone (not smart phone) does video, audio and apps- so the difference is blurring)"

"We partnered with an israeli company - Codename One- theirs is a fantastic app where you can develop an app in java and the software then outputs native files for J2ME, Android, IOS, WindowsPhone7, and we partnered with Codename One to enable the Ad SDK in the same 1click which delivers monetisation across platforms without any coding"

Pushkar Chitale Mobango Appstore

My video with Pushkar Chitale, Product Head, Mobango, an independent App store- with 6 million subscribers and 1 million downloads daily... whose value proposition is in ensuring that your content or app doesn't get lost in the clutter in IOS or the Google Play marketplace with their hundreds of thousands of apps. They deliver the package- get apps to come on board, distribute and monetise.

The impact is expected to be in Indian mobile gaming industry which is worth ~ US$ 100 million and growing @40 per cent annually. This is just the paid downloads market through the telecom operator channels. Ad revenues based distribution of games is very popular in India, driven by very large number of free downloads of apps and games in India. Approximate apps and  games downloads are 3-4 million per day in India. This is through the prominent app stores including Mobango. India has close to 12-13 million social media gamers which is growing at 14 per cent CAGR. Sports games like cricket are in vogue as well as games in the action, arcade and Bollywood genre. The key difference between India and rest of the world is that most of the downloads are still on the Java platform with limited penetration of smartphone platforms like Android or iOS. This is already changing over the next 18 months. Current smartphone penetration is still 3-4 per cent of devices and this is expected to rise to double digits with the launch of several low cost Android devices.
